5 Steps for creating Operating System for your business!

Hi,

When you are buying a new mobile or new computer, you look for these gadgets with specific Operating System (OS) like Windows or Android. You will not be able to use these gadgets if they did not have OS. Many businesses do not have basic system in place for running of a business smoothly. What they need to have is an OS. How things should happen, who should do what, what are the control mechanisms, etc. Some organisations need help of experts to design their annual operating plan. Therefore, if your business is in Pune, you will look for management consultancy in Pune.

5 Steps for creating Operating System for your business

    1. Write annual operating plan.

We cannot create a system for a lifetime of an organization. What we can create is a system for next one year. Based on your experience, you can tweak the system on need basis. In an annual operating plan, you should write what exactly your organization wants to achieve. You can elaborate on focus area for your business. You can estimate the amount of work you can expect in a year. How many units of products you estimate to manufacture. How much number of hours you expect to provide different types of services you provide, and so on. Remember, writing your annual operating plan will be the first milestone you need to pass on your journey of developing an operating system.

    1. Identify & assign projects.

From the annual operating plan, you will find cluster of activities that involve numerous tasks. That cluster of activities is one project. There are number of projects you will need to execute. If you want to reduce your product development or service delivery cost, it becomes a project. If you want to initiate prospecting of getting customers from new industry, it becomes a project. If you want to increase quality of products and services you offer, it becomes a project. Like this, you will find numerous projects from the annual operating plan you will develop. You will need to assign each project to one person. Then you can ask the assigned project manager to develop and provide you with project plan, budget, and relevant items. Remember, what motivates your team and accordingly assign the projects.

    1. Create annual operating budget

The most basic control mechanism available in your operating system is a budget. Once you have assigned different projects identified from annual operating plan, you can ask the project managers to come up with a budget for executing each project. Once you add up budgets for all the projects, you will get rough annual budget. To this budget, add some more amount as a contingency and you will get fairly good amount of the total annual operating budget. Remember, you can operate neither a nation nor your house without a budget!

    1. Design annual operating calendar

If you remember school days, the most basic thing every school provides at the beginning of an academic year is an academic calendar. The calendar provides list of holidays, list of events, etc. Similarly, you should have an annual operating calendar which should includes project initiation and closure dates, review meeting dates, etc. Remember, we are all driven by our calendars!

    1. Review

Without review, you will not be able to reach your destination. A sculptor reviews her work of art continuously and makes necessary changes so that the result is almost close to what she had in mind from the beginning. You should review your annual operating plan weekly. Next to a calendar, the most important cluster of days to us is a week. Remember, we live our life in weekly basis!
