Attend a book reading dedicated to Elon Musk, the man who inspired the character of Tony Stark

In a career spanning two decades, Silicon Valley’s visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk has started some of the most game-changing companies in history. The South African-born billionaire is the innovator of PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity. He is also the inspiration behind Tony Stark, the fictional superhero of Iron Man.

In his book Elon Musk: How the Billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla is Shaping our Future, American author Ashlee Vance has captured the arc of Musk’s life. Vance wrote the book after interviewing Musk and those closest to him. Given the innovator’s tremendous impact on technology, Dr Sachin Mohan Bhide, founder of Business Book Readers’ Club (BBRC), has chosen the tittle for his next book reading session scheduled to take place at the National Chemical Laboratory’s (NCL) Venture Centre this weekend. “The book offers a detailed narrative on Musk,” said Bhide, a corporate strategy designer.

Bhide aims to inspire people from all walks of life by sharing his insights on Musk’s persona. “For instance, Elon was a voracious reader. He is said to have read an entire encyclopedia while still in school,” said Bhide.

In the book, a PayPal investor Kevin Hartz, comments on Musk’s love for reading: “We’re all hanging out in this cabana at the Hard Rock Cafe, and Elon is there reading some obscure Soviet rocket manual that was all moldy and looked like it had been bought on eBay.”

Musk is known to work 100 hours a week. “The intense focus he has on his projects is also something people can imbibe to become successful,” added Bhide. There is a passage in the biography that talks about Musk’s prodigious concentration. “At times, he is said to be so engrossed on a task that it is impossible to speak to him,” said Bhide. Most importantly, he invested in the future to become more successful. He used the fortune he made after selling PayPal to build Tesla, a company that manufactures electric cars.

Patience is another characteristic that defines Musk. “Whatever Elon has managed to achieve is extremely difficult and extraordinary. But he never gave up on his goals despite facing many challenges,” said Bhide, “he is a very practical man too. Elon believes that the design of products must complement execution.” The work spaces in Musk’s companies are an extension of the production unit. “Designers don’t sit at separate cubicles at Tesla or SpaceX: they can view the factory floor to think and act spontaneously,” said Bhide. The book reading session is free and open to all.
