Applications of Internet of Things (IoT) in turbulent time

If you forgot to switch off lights or any electronic equipmentat your home connected to sensor and you are in office then it is possible to control it through mobile! In agriculture, to grow healthy crops and without infectants requires proper pest management. Farmers generally use manual processes to check for pest infestations. Such manual testing istime consuming.Hence, the infections may not be noticed at earlier stage. To save time and efforts Internet of Things ( IoT ) can be used to collect data by sensors about pest behaviorthat specific farm.

If weather patterns change, according to that IoT sensor will do predictive analysis which helps farmers to prepare in advance. Smart devices can inform if the current pesticide used would lead to required result or not.Up to date information to farmer helps to apply pesticides appropriately instead of praying for best results.

The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic creates huge challenges for the government as well as public health officials to collect information rapidly and synchronize to response. In such critical situation IoT plays major role in foreseeing an outbreak and also reducing its spread. Big data enable data generated through IoT on timely basis and mobile devices in real time.

There have been numerous instances where the police forces are using drone-based video surveillance which is a classic IoT application for this challenging time.

It is important find IoTapplications in industrial operations in this situation. IoT devices are helpful to reduce spread of infection by avoiding human contact.

What is IoT?

IoT stands for Internet of Things and known for smart device system which can work smartly to transfer and receiving information with unique code identifier through internet without any human or computer interaction. Some of the popular applications of IoT are Amazon Alexa devices, Google Home, drones, video doorbells, smartwatches, baby monitoring smart cameras and so on.

Role of IoT in operations of the company

Internet of Things (IoT) plays an important role in various sectors of operations like manufacturing, product management, launching new product, inventory management, warehouse management etc. to have control on each and every activity and also regulate their day to day activities to work efficiently.

Some of the important roles IoT plays in operations

  • IoT enables rapid manufacturing process of new products, real-time optimization of manufacturing production, dynamic response to product demand, by interconnecting the machinery, sensors and all control systems together.
  • IoT can authenticate the location of goods at any time by sensorsconnected to a container or raw material or a product themselves. These sensors transmit their location through a GPS satellite.
  • IoT also helps in monitoring storage conditions of materials and products like food, chemicals, etc.It can monitor parameters such like temperature, humidity, light intensity and other such factors. If certain threshold breached, it can trigger alarm. This helps in maintaining the quality of goods and reducing spoilage.
  • Efficient storage and distribution of products in warehouses through IoT enabled applications.
  • Data output of the IoT devices can be directly feed to any software system.

Addressing operational challenges

  • Lockdown had shut-down all the non-essential manufacturing. They have challenge to work from home. Many have not used online meeting platforms before.
  • Ensure all machinery working properly to avoid further injuries and carry out preventive maintenance to reduce breakdowns.
  • After lockdown reopening of industries faces challenges like production planning, understanding market demand, product focus, raw material availabilityat appropriate cost, and so on.
  • Are stocked products in good condition?
  • Challenges in adhering to preliminary heath precautions required post lockdown.

Impact of IoTin operations on post Covid-19 world

The important thing in this tough time is healthy human beings. Many countries have announced lockdowns. This is a time device new application of the IoT.During this pandemic situation medicines as well as test kits are required to reach at particular place within specific time hence there is need of IoT to work efficiently. In such scenarios the best possible method is to use Drones with IoT devices to make delivery on time without human contact. In Singapore thermal scanner are established in office buildings to scan the temperature of a person passed by. Internet of Things (IoT) surveillance is best method to track the movement of people and collect data to find patients from the cluster of corona infection. During the outbreak of Covid-19, it is important to ensure that everyone is taking precautions.

A view of an IoT expert

We interviewed IoT expert who wished to be anonymous. She shared knowledge about the impact and applications of IoT technology.“The current lockdown situation may not find any growing demand for IoT applications. Survival of business is difficult since new project development will not start immediately. Production is getting hampered; people are losing their jobs and there isn’t any new recruitment. Revenue generation will also be a challenge which inturn is going to impact the salaries and wages. Demand for IoT applications will trigger once the economy is stabilized. In medical sector there will be huge demand for IoT enabled equipment’s for measuring temperature or thermal imaging. The demand for IoT used in agriculture should also pickup due to lockdown situation. One of the industry sectors that prominently adopted IoT is Energy Sector. It uses IoT for storing and measuring energy data, billing through cloud, IoT checks outage presence, etc. The impact of IoT ecosystem on post corona may see cost cutting asthe major issue since the companies will try to sustain instead of investing in Research and Development (R&D). Medical and agriculture sectors are still working in lockdown situation and hence the Internet of Things (IoT) solution provider can focus on these two segments. Cost cutting will be stabilizing after the lockdown and businesses will try to overcome from losses also take corrective actions to resolve issue.”

If you are utilizing IoT in your business will be glad to learn about it!
